Hi Peter, As the GEMS system on older P38 Range Rovers used the T4 (same as the MEMS and older Rover Systems used), I wonder if it woudl be possible for your system to connect to it as well? It would open another market, and also as I have a good old P38 help me out too!

The landrover market is there for the picking on the following models with what you have currently I reckon.
Discovery 1
Discovery 2
Freelander 1
Range Rover P38a

These pretty much use rover stuff.

Noted.

I do have a have a very long list of things to do though.

I also need to do the 5AS and stop people buying those knock off Chinese clone tools.

Was the GEMS fitted to any Rovers at all or only LandRover products?

I think GEMS was Landover version of MEMS

Gems refers to the single plenum 4.0/4.6
whereas thor is the later management on p38a range rovers

Discoverys have siemens ecus, freelanders are basically nearly identical to rovers.

Defenders do use disco engine management on the td5, no bcm

As GEMS uses T4 as the Rovers do I assume it's 'compatible' though with the right software?

The 4cyl 2l mpi Discoverys have a MEMS ecu fitted. I think the GEMS was only fitted to the V8

Looking at http://www.v8register.net/subpages/RV8N ... pdated.htm it appears to communicate with T4 so maybe another form of MEMs?

The Freelander KV6 used the same Siemens EMS200 as the ZS/45 and ZT/75 KV6's.

The RV8 had Lucas multi point injection and a traditional distributor so probably had a Lucas ECU for ignition as well.

There was a period when Rover ran separate Lucas ECU's for fuel and ignition just before they went back to MEMS when they introduced injection and cats for the '92/93 emissions regulations.

Could I do any damage by plugging it in to my Landy and seeing what it does? I would imagine on obd it should report stuff?

It can't see it doing any harm, but in case there are any lawyers on here it has to be at your own risk.

Hehe OK no problem... I assume it just acts like an odb scanner in that mode anyhow.

The MG RV8 used the 14CUX ECU that was sourced from the Range Rover classic.

It has a different diagnostic plug than the Land Rover one.

Finally got round to plugging in to my Landy....

It kicked in fine. Found interface etc. I chose EOBD option and it flashed something about 'suspect 12v + on K Line' or similar, then connected to the ECU.

It found a couple of fault codes and allowed me to clear them. However when I went to live data I opened each and it didn't show any actual live data.

Hope that helps to decide if it may work in the future?

Have you tried any ELM327 interfaces or other OBD2 scanners on it?

I think that live data should work so this is looking like a bug in our software. I don't have access to a P38 to work on it though.

I've got a Bluetooth obd2 adapter and that communicates ok, although Torque gives a lot less info than your interface can potentially give.

Did the P38a comms get any further? I've got to remove my P38a 4.6 engine soon for some core plugs and oil leaks. Would be great to be able to connect before removal and check everything over, in case the old guy needs anything else while it's out.

I have an ebay bid on a GEMS ECU at the moment.
It depends how expensive it gets.

GEMS ECU arrived today.

Do any of you have a wiring diagram and picture of the connector on the ECU so that I can power it up?

Hi,

Did this project get any further? If you need any testing let me know. My Rangie (after I took the huge 4.6 out to do a mni-refurb on it) is now my 50/50 driver with my TF so would be useful to have diagnotics for it

Thanks,
Adam

I've been hearing about the need for GEMS diagnostics from Range Rover P38 owners, it'd be good if the Pscan could do these cars too.

I tried out this GEMS ECU that I have. It says GEMS 8 and 4.6 (in biro) on it.

Pscan 0419 is able to read error codes and live data on it using EOBD slow init.

Another that I have has some more advanced features, specifically security (I guess 10AS) learning and adaptation.
I will have a look at replicating those features in pscan as well.

It look like it might be quite simple, touch wood.

Realised I didn't reply! .... Rangie has been off the road since just after my last reply with a knocking engine.... I now have a spare car/engine and am in they process of swapping it over so hopefully I'll test it soon.

We have a GEMS ECU in the lab, and we have reverse engineered the cryptographic login algorithm.
It still needs a bit more work before releasing it to customers though.
